A true boutique lab for truly serious filmmakers

Two years ago, Alex Moradian joined LaserPacific Media Corporation as senior vice president for business development. For 24 years prior to his joining LaserPacific, Moradian had been president and co-owner of Hollywood Film & Video where he helped to create what had been regarded as one of the most tightly calibrated film laboratories in the world. His vast customer base catered to the VFX, optical and to emerging DI facilities as well as the studios. Under his leadership, he created a system whereby digitally finished images for visual effects, trailers and digital intermediate work could be effectively and accurately calibrated with the photochemical laboratory process.

In his new role at LaserPacific, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Kodak, he reports to LaserPacific CEO Brian Burr, "Alex Moradian has a proven record of delighting customers with the most consistent, highest quality film process in the world", Burr says; "His relentless focus on delivering to our customers what they need is a tremendous asset for LaserPacific." Today, film calibration is a huge challenge for most large labs, especially as they need to deliver highly accurate representations of digital output for motion pictures. Alex has been able to create a very focused, precisely calibrated film lab boutique within LaserPacific. This allows LaserPacific to deliver the sort of accuracy and calibrated output that is absolutely necessary for today's digital to film work.

"This is an exciting time in our industry," Moradian says. "The technology used for post production and final finishing of content for television and cinema are rapidly evolving, but the goal is still the same. Whether it's a television program, movie or trailer for the cinema, people in this industry are determined to create compelling entertainment. We are committed to staying ahead of the technology curve and providing timely and affordable post production services without creative compromises."

LaserPacific's Tradition of Innovation

Moradian notes that LaserPacific has been at the cutting edge of workflow innovation since the company was founded in 1982.  "Laser Pacific Film Laboratory has become one of the most tightly calibrated film laboratories in the industry." Moradian says. "With our world class facilities, our dedicated and talented staff and a parent company like Kodak - whose incomparable history of pioneering imaging science and technology is a huge asset to us; I am confident that we will be able to take our filmmaking customers to the next level."

Prior to Moradian joining LaserPacific, the film lab concentrated on front end negative developing services, primarily for the television industry. The lab, which was built in 1989 as the first lab in Hollywood built for the rigors and to the cleanliness standards necessary for the transfer of negative on a telecine scanner, was the perfect complement to LaserPacific's pioneering Electronic Laboratory.  The Electronic Laboratory has, for the past nearly 25 years, helped to define and create the industry's film workflow model. As this model has increasingly been adopted by feature films, through the digital preview process as well as Digital Intermediate, the need for high quality print and film intermediate services have grown. As motion pictures increasingly pass through digital post production processes and as LaserPacific's reputation and capabilities in Digital Motion Picture services has grown, it was natural for the film lab to expand to offer full negative and positive services. And it was equally natural to turn to Alex Moradian for the job of creating one of the industry's most tightly calibrated full service lab offerings.

Adding to LaserPacific's full array of end-to-end post production services for the television and motion picture industries is a full complement of film lab services - negative development in both 16mm and 35mm as well as 35mm dailies, intermediate, and answer prints. For trailer customers, LaserPacific is also able to provide release prints.

Calibration is Key

The best color control in the industry does not just happen. Color control is a pure science, and complicated process, that demands perfection and team work. Temperature, speed, and voltage all affect color and it takes the precision of a complete team including the developing crew, the chemistry department, and the precision of seasoned machinists all working in sync to elicit the perfect color result to meet a customer's visual expectation. Moradian describes the lab as a small intricate organization that is able to, "have the best and do the best."  He is proud of the fact that his team can work with each customer in a way that even the smaller clients can experience a personal relationship with the best small lab in town.

It is this exacting professional and creative art of the photochemical process and the strict tolerances that are controlled and measured that allows LaserPacific to achieve its very accurate results. The ability to control this process in a boutique environment gives LaserPacific a huge advantage over larger labs which have vast amounts of chemicals to try to control. Like a small batch brewery or winery, LaserPacific has almost an artisan ability to craft a balance in its process that can yield a difference you can see. When asked what makes LaserPacific different, Alex Moradian just smiles, and says, " A lot of hard work and experience, a lot of teamwork, respect for the client and a little bit of alchemy we mix with the chemistry." Ask LaserPacific's customers and they'll tell you that Alex knows what he's talking about.
