Georgia O'Keeffe

georgia_posterStarring Joan Allen as Georgia O'Keeffe, a leading force in American art in the twentieth century, and Jeremy Irons as her long-time lover, photographer Alfred Steiglitz, this biopic from Lifetime Television tells the story of the artist and her turbulent relationship with Steiglitz. It will premiere on Lifetime on September 19th 2009. LaserPacific's involvement included some challenging shots that forced senior VFX artist Jason Wilson to come up with some new 3D matte painting techniques to turn present-day downtown Los Angeles into New York City in the nineteen twenties and thirties. According to Jason, "the client requested that we build a cityscape of New York in the nineteen twenties and thirties that was accurate to the period with the skyline based on actual photographs taken by Alfred Stieglitz."

Because flying to New York City was out of the question, Jason organized a reference shoot in downtown LA using a digital SLR camera to photograph textures from the many period buildings there. No complete buildings were used - elements from many different buildings were used to create new buildings in Adobe Photoshop™ which were then projected onto 3D geometry as textures. For one particular challenging shot, the backplate was moving with a pan so 3D tracking was needed prior to the elements being put together in Autodesk's Maya™. The scene also called for snow. Although practical snow had been shot, Jason was unable to use it because the backplate contained many objects that had to be removed such as stands, cables and lights. 3D snow was generated that matched the snow that covered the actors. All this work created a seamless, convincing shot that helped to tell the story of Georgia O'Keeffe and gave the client exactly what they needed.
