Zack and Miri Make a Porno

Kevin Smith returns to LaserPacific for Zack and Miri Make a Porno.

zackandmiri_stillIn his review in the Los Angeles Times, Michael Phillips describes Zack and Miri Make A Porno as having a “bright, chipper look to it, thanks to cinematographer Dave Klein, a frequent Smith colleague.” He adds, “wintertime in Pittsburgh never looked so good.” The collaboration between director Kevin Smith and David Klein stretches back fourteen years to Smith's directorial debut Clerks in 1994. Since then, David Klein has shot over twenty movies, including four more with Kevin Smith: Chasing Amy, Mallrats, Clerks 2 and most recently, Zack and Miri Make a Porno. Zack and Miri is Kevin Smith's second project with LaserPacific and with senior colorist Dave Cole. David Klein also worked with Dave Cole on Good Time Max, directed by actor/director James Franco.

“Over the course of these projects”, says Dave Cole, “we've developed a collaborative way of working together that enables us to work quickly to achieve the look that David and Kevin are striving for.” Dave Cole's involvement in the project began in pre-production and continued during production with supervision of the dailies, which were transferred by LaserPacific's Bruce Goodman. These dailies tapes were conformed and graded by Cole for preview screenings. Once the cut was finalized, the digital intermediate process began. “Because of Dave Cole's participation in the project from the beginning, much of the work of establishing the look of the movie was already done by the time the clients walked into the theatre for their grading session,” elaborates Leon Silverman, President of LaserPacific, “that's not to say that the look can't be changed, but the time in the grading theatre can be used efficiently and creatively.”
