On October 1st 2009, the nominees for this years Hollywood Post Alliance (HPA) awards were announced. The work of LaserPacific's talented colorists was recognized in two categories. Senior Colorist Tim Vincent was one of three nominees for the award for Outstanding Color Grading for Television. Tim was recognized for his work on AMC's Mad Men, specifically for the episode entitled The Jet Set.

The HPA awards, launched in 2006, acknowledge creative and technical excellence in the art, science and craft of post production in twelve categories. They were created to foster awareness of post production, promote creative and technical excellence, recognize the achievements of post production talent, and build involvement in the Hollywood Post Alliance. The winners will be announced on November 12th during a gala evening ceremony at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles.

Leading the Way in 3D

LaserPacific provides 3D grading services in the run up to Comic Con

theater1_fromsideThe advent of digital projection and the desire to continue to attract audiences to the movie theater has led to a renewed interest in stereoscopic 3D. Now consumer electronics firms are scrambling to bring out televisions that will support 3D viewing in the home. Sony and Panasonic are both planning to introduce large screen HD TV sets with 3D capability next year and already manufacturers like Mitsubishi are offering “3D ready” sets. With more and more movies being displayed in 3D, it was natural that LaserPacific's clients would start to ask about digital intermediate tools for this new arena. With the biggest DI grading theater in Los Angeles, featuring a 33 foot screen, LaserPacific has a great environment for 3D. Screen size is very important for depth perception, so the more closely the grading environment matches an actual movie theater, the better.

The effort was spearheaded for the ASC by Technology Committee Chairman Curtis Clark, ASC. Revelations Entertainment provided production support, led by Lori McCreary. On the LaserPacific side, senior colorist Mike Sowa spearheaded the color grading with Doug Jaqua providing technical leadership and Rob Smith and his team supplying operational support.

Having worked with LaserPacific on his first digital intermediate, The Black Dahlia, he knew he could trust his images to LaserPacific. What he did not know was that LaserPacific was able to deliver his dailies in a way he thought could only be done on film. “With aIM, I now have everything I had with film, and more.”
